To prevent ants from getting in your house, seal up cracks. Doing this in the cupboards is what eventually reduced them for me. A non-toxic method for sealing cracks is 100 percent silicone caulk.
There are more ideas here, but I haven't tried most of them, the sealing up the cracks seemed to be what I needed.
